Gorton, Joan I. (Mulcahy), 97, of Cranston, RI, returned to the Lord on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 surrounded by her family and friends at her home, after a lengthy battle with heart disease.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Timothy J. Mulcahy and Isabelle M. (Grondin) Mulcahy. She was a 1935 graduate of St. Xavier's Academy.

Mrs. Gorton was the wife of the late Everett B. Gorton, and the mother of the Rev. Timothy J. Gorton and James K. Gorton, with whom she lived. She was predeceased by her daughter, Rosemary G. Wasserman, and sons, William J. and John P. Gorton. She was the sister of the late Mason L. Mulcahy. Mrs. Gorton is also survived by her sister, Mary Jane Sedivy of Middlefield, Ohio and her daughter-in-law, Angela Gorton of Cranston, RI, son-in-law Myron (Mike) Wasserman of Florida and Linda Hopkins of New Hampshire, and many nieces, and nephews. She was the proud grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of five. She also leaves dear and devoted friends and caregivers, and her Hospice family.

Mrs. Gorton was an employee of the Cranston School Department and loved her responsibilities transporting emotionally, physically, and educationally challenged children. She was instrumental in organizing drivers into their first union during the 1960's.

Mrs. Gorton was a lifelong member of St. Ann's Church in Cranston until its dissolution when she became a member of St. France Church in Hillsgrove.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, from 3 to 6 P.M. Her funeral will be celebrated Monday, January 12 from the Stapleton Family Funeral Home, 685 Park Avenue, Cranston, R.I., at 8:30 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in George Maronite Catholic Church, (formerly St. Ann's), 1493 Cranston St., Cranston R.I. 02920 with burial in St. Ann's Cemetery.
